Marsh leads energy and property broker rankings in latest Gracechurch survey

Marsh has retained its position as the top overall energy broker in the latest edition of the Gracechurch London’s Leading Brokers survey, although rival Howden has closed the gap over the past 12 months. 

Research and advisory firm Gracechurch said Marsh upstream energy broker David Patten had ranked highest in the individual category for the class, recognised as a “top quality market participant who knows how to get the best out of most underwriters”, according to one nomination.

Glenn O’Halloran, executive director of environmental and climate risks at Howden, was named runner-up, ahead of Lockton upstream broker Arthur Llewelyn in third.

New entrant Ed saw oil and gas broker Michael Addington voted in fourth place.

O’Halloran, Llewelyn and Addington are all new entrants on the individual broker rankings.

Last year’s winner Aditya Khanna, chief client officer, energy, Middle East and Africa at Marsh, rounded off the top five list of individual brokers.

Gracechurch said Howden was “notably closing the gap” to finish in a closer second place overall in the 2022 survey at company level.

Independent specialty broker Alesco placed third overall in the energy line despite having no individual nominated brokers appearing in the top five ranking.

Last year’s winner Aditya Khanna, chief client officer, energy, Middle East and Africa at Marsh, rounded off the top five individual brokers.

Marsh also retained its leading spot in the property business line, with co-head of property and placement leader Jason Taylor named as the top individual property broker.

With Gracechurch noting that the property line is “defined by fierce competition”, Price Forbes took second and third positions with head of international property Ben Wheeler and executive director of property and non-marine Jonathan Greener respectively.

Katie Underwood, executive director at Aon, was ranked fourth, with one nomination noting she “knows her clients and the market”.

Gracechurch said: “According to our findings, the top three firms are breaking away from the rest in terms of bench strength, although the others remain fiercely competitive with only 5 points between 4th and 10th.”

The ranking of the top five individual property brokers finished up with Gallagher’s Nick Smith.

Interestingly, the 2022 list contained a completely different selection of individuals than in 2021, although Marsh still led the property rankings last year with senior vice president Sandeep Nijjer in the top spot.
